Hello fellow anglers

22.september 2009

As the 2009 season draws to a close in Iceland we are already reflecting and have found that we are deeply satisfied with the performances of our main rivers. The season will not be a record season as last year but we are well over the average which means basically that the rivers were full of salmon. Long draughts meant low water levels during a critical time of the season, however our rivers are not in the areas that were worst hit.

Breiðdalsá fishes to the end of September. We are looking like an 800 salmon total this year. That is less than last year, yet a fully acceptable total and not the least because of our outstanding mws-versus-grilse ratio which is one of the best in the country, if not the best. Some of the grilse were super small but that is not out of the ordinary and super small grisle were caught in all the east coast rivers this year. We have several huge, over 20 pound, salmon this season as usual, the biggest estimated at 25-27 pounds. Conditions were good most of the season, except last week had probably the lowest water and fishing therefore dropped.

Breiðdalsá

Happy angler with one of the many big Breiðdalsá salmon in 2009.

Hrutafjarðará  is looking like breaking its record catch this season. While writing, there are a few days left of the season, the river is full of fish and the total looks like exceeding 630 salmon, which is sensational for a three rod river.

The Jökla project is on its usuall upward spiral and although there were some big gaps in the booking we expect the system to total over three hundred salmon plus an excellent haul of various trout, sea char, stationary browns and even some sea trout. This is the best fishing we have had on the Jökla system since starting our adventure there. We cannot shake the feeling that this is like our Breiðdalsá project in its early years. Slowly and surely we transformed Breiðdalsá into a major salmon river and we are doing the same thing with Jökla. According to our smolt releasing, we fully expect the Jökla system to double its productivity next year.

Finally on the salmon front, we feel that Laxá í Nesjum, our small river on the southeast coast, will end up with an average total of some 130 salmon, give or take a few! The river was low for most of the summer, yet rains have pepped it up recently and the fishing is good.

Kaldá

Into a fish in main tributary of Jökla named Kaldá river.

Jökla

Jökla fishery is not just for salmon, good sea-run arctic char fishing is there also, and good size as can be seen here.

Minnivallalækur is doing very well, we have between 300-400 browns in the catch book and some of the high season dry fly groups were in some mind boggling action. Plus, there are more huge fish than we have seen for some years.

Finally Tungulækur, probably the best sea trout river in the world. It has been fishing very, very well and besides the numerous big sea trout, it has just had its best salmon runs ever.

The angling season is for the most part drawing to a close, although Tungulækur fishes deep into Oktober. So there is still the possibility of an eventful fishing trip to Iceland in 2009. We have already started booking for 2010 so it would be a smart thing to do, to call us or e-mail us with your questions and wishes. Plus, we have the ptarmigan season just around the corner and offer some of Iceland's best shooting locations and top drawer lodges.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Minnivallalækur

From Minnivallalækur last week, big trout and heavy rain!
