Worlds best sea-trout fishing at your doorstep?

5.January 2010

You might think that you need to go to South America for world class sea trout fishing. Nothing could be further from the truth, as it is in truth right at your doorstep, so to speak. You need go no further than to Iceland, where the sea trout are  numerous, big and last but not least, native, not implanted as in Argentina.

A mere three hours flight from the UK or any other west European city, we take you from Keflavik airport for a three hour drive through stunning ever changing scenery to the small, delightful Tungulaekur, which is by the way, full of sea trout (and quite a lot of salmon as well). It is a three to four rod river and by far the best sea trout river in Iceland. Making it one of the best, and even arguably THE best, in the world. It has a beautiful new lodge, full service if requested, expert guides and lots of fish.

The sea trout are for the most part a spring and late season fishery. The spring season starts on April 1rst and is productive well into May. Anglers are then encountering spawners from the year before and hoards of juvenile fish, the latter mostly 2 to 4 pounders, the former from 5 pounds and up, up, up.....well into double figures, most of them in excellent shape. The spring fishing is in the bottom 4-5 pools of the river and the junction where the river meets Skafta, its glacial mother river. Late May they leave the river and we have a few weeks of minimal action. But in the middle of July, things hot up again with salmon runs and they are steady throughout August. Last season was the rivers best salmon season with over 200 fish caught.

But this river is all about sea trout fishing and in late July the first ones start to arrive. They are almost all big fish. As August progresses, the runs strenghten and reach their peak in September. October is also usually a very good month. Another good thing about Tungulaekur, you could say, besides its being a fantastic sea trout river is that if you have half a day to spend before or after your stay on the river, you could use your time to try out one of the worlds best brown trout rivers, our own Minnivallalaekur, which is also between between Tungulækur and the capital Reykjavík. The river is known widely for quality in favor of quantity. You‘ll hardly catch many, but they will be big, some of them very big, the best well into double figures, and they are wild native trout. So you could actually combine for the best of two worlds.

And do not forget. In the current economic climate, the Icelandic currency is very weak placed alongside a Euro og US Dollar. Which makes a trip up here particulalry tempting.
