Our rivers opened on 1 July, and like most of the rivers in Iceland there were salmon waiting for us in encouraging numbers.
I’ve just returned from the Hrutafjardara where we had good water levels and great fishing. The first week produced 25 fish, followed by 8 on Monday. Fish are running early and of those caught so far 1 in 3 has been between 14lb and 18lb.
Over on the opposite side of the country at Breiddalsa we’ve started well with 13 salmon, but flood conditions for half the week slowed things down considerably. Worst luck more rain is forecast for this week. But the fish are there and it will be interesting to see what develops when the water fines down. The grilse are in already, but the bulk of July’s fish are 2SW salmon.
It’s early days for the Jokla, but so far local rods have taken three salmon. The char fishing, as usual, is excellent. We should have much more news about the salmon later this month.
